Thank goodness for Five Minute Friday or I might never get any writing done. Sometimes I feel less than when all I get done on ye ol’ blog is just this short little post but I guess five minutes is better than no minutes.
This week’s writing prompt is Turn.
Five minutes are on the timer…GO!
The very first thing that pops into my mind when I saw this writing prompt was the song Turn, Turn, Turn by The Byrds.
This song was released in December of 1965. A lot was happening in 1965. The Vietnam war, civil rights, Selma, marches on Washington, marches across the United States sit-ins. It was a time of turmoil to be sure.
It makes me think about what is happening in our country right now. The world keeps spinning, the carousel of history keeps turning and seems to be repeating itself but with different players and slightly different story lines. Women’s rights marches, Black Lives Matter, teenagers marching on Washington demanding not to get shot in school to name a few. This song has so much hope in it but it makes me wonder; when will there be a time for understanding? When will there be a time for peace? Among all of the marches and demonstrations, are we able to turn toward one another and find common ground or will we continue to turn away from each other?
On the state level, teachers feel defeated. They feel like legislatures turned away from them, waited them out, dug their heals in and then patted themselves on the back for doing only part of their job. Will there be a time for valuing the other even at the cost of our own pride?
STOP!
Is there a place in your life where you need to turn toward someone and look at them in a new light?

That was a profound five minutes. Well done and so true!
