It has been a while since I’ve participated in a Five Minute Friday writing prompt. There are several reasons…school is back in session and I’m still getting used to the new schedule, I’m in charge of Assistance League Norman’s biggest fundraiser (no pressure) so that eats up a lot of my brain power, but mostly when I see the writing prompt email come through on Friday morning I think ugh, I don’t have it in me to write for five whole minutes. There are way too many other things I need to be procrastinating on right now, I just can’t deal with adding another thing to add to my list.
However, I saw the word SUCCESS on the writing prompt and decided to go for it other obligations be damned.
Five minutes are on the timer…go!
What does it mean to be successful?
Is it directly related to your bank account? To the size of your house or type of car you drive?
Is success tied up in career?
The more followers, likes, hearts, subscribers you have mean you are more successful?
Perhaps success is determined by the number of people you interact with or make a positive impact on.
Is success simply getting through the day with out yelling at the kids and not experiencing any “mom guilt”?
Maybe success can be measured on the scale.
Do other people determine your success or do you? Is your self-worth tied up in how successful you feel? If you experience depression does that mean you aren’t successful? If you overcome depression is that success?
Is success determined by your relationships? What if you are in a bunch of toxic relationships, are you the unsuccessful person or are those people unsuccessful at being in relationship?
Is success linked to your happiness or vice versa? And what makes us truly happy anyway? Money, popularity, stuff, helping others? Which brings us back to what determines success in the first place.
There are so many iterations of success that I don’t think there is a one size fits all answer.
How do you determine success?
STOP!
