Subtractive Art for Little Hands

According to our art teacher at Scissortail School of Art, subtractive art is when you take something away from the art and the absence becomes the focal point.  According to me its more of a stick something on, paint and then peel the sticker off kinda art.

We started with a piece of board, added foam sticker letters, painted over it all, removed the stickers and voila! Art!  It was a little more involved than that because after the fact I decided to paint the blank space so that we wouldn’t be able to see the wood and of course that took me about 3 months to complete.  Not because it was hard but because I’m a master at procrastination.

The hardest part of this project was trying to decide what to say on our little board.  Mary Poppins is one of Harry’s favorite movies so….

Most of the other kids and moms (okay, just the moms) used painters tape to create their word or phase.  Because I decided on a seriously long word I had to use the foam letters.  There is no way I could get this to work with painters tape.  Harry helped me cover the board with paint.  Fun times had by all.
