I did not wake up at 5:00 a.m. last Friday. TiVo woke up at 4:00 a.m. and did all the work for me. It took me most of the day to watch the wedding as my own little Prince Harry wasn’t quite as interested in it as I was. Thankfully he graced me with a longer than usual nap and I was able to revel in all the pomp and circumstance.
Here’s my 3 minute recap…
Every time they mentioned Diana or showed footage of her wedding I got choked up. I kept wondering if the princes spoke of their mom and how she was with them in spirit. It’s been a long time since her passing and the boys have grown up but still…it’s their mom.
Wedding dress fashion has changed in the blink of an eye. Have you noticed how over the past 10 years ALL wedding dresses you see on TV are strapless? Even all dresses I see hanging in boutique windows are strapless. 10 1/2 years ago I had a strapless wedding dress but it was certainly not the only option. It fact it was a little uncommon. Mark my words; strapless gowns are on their way out thanks to Catherine’s lace.
2 billion people tuned in to watch. That’s nuts. Seriously, can you come up with any other event that would produce those ratings?
What is our fascination with the royal family? Is it because we don’t have anything like it in the US? Maybe we’re drawn to the romantic, fairy tale quality of it. If we had lost the Revolutionary war things would be a lot different around here. 235 years ago our fore fathers thumbed their noses at the British and said they could do it on their own. On July 4, 1776 we signed the Declaration of Independence and gave the monarchy a big “f-you” and the die was cast. If you ever want a refresher course in American History, rent the HBO mini series John Adams. So interesting and very well done. Make sure you turn on the pop-up-video type commentary feature. But I digress.

I’ve heard from two different moms that their daughters were surprised that princes and princesses are real. They thought they were just make believe like fairies and mermaids. Wow, really? And, let’s just get one thing straight. Fairies, mermaids and unicorns ARE real. They are on the endangered species list and extremely rare and that’s why we never see them. I’m glad we could get that cleared up.
