Fun Times In Spite of Football – Oklahoma/Texas recap

posted in: My Hero | 2

In case you live outside of Oklahoma or Texas and didn’t get the memo; this past weekend was a big deal.  For die hard Sooner and Longhorn fans regular life comes to a screeching halt as we focus our energy on this one weekend.  Red River Rivalry.  Oklahoma football is a religion in these parts and when I took my wedding vows I also pledged my loyalty to the crimson and cream.

Unfortuantly, it wasn’t in the cards for the Sooners this weekend.  I found myself willing Bell to complete a pass, as if I had the power to make it happen.  If I held my hands just right (close to a prayer pose) and concentrated hard enough (faith like a mustard seed) then glory would be ours.  Apparently I don’t have X-Men style powers.  Dang it.

Despite the loss Dear Husband and I had a stellar weekend.  Amazing what a kid-free weekend will do for you.  Dear Husband had a work event in Dallas on Friday night so we unloaded the boys on my parents on Thursday and high tailed it to the Big D.

In spite of a super disappointing performance from our team we had an excellent weekend.  It started with dinner with friends at a new hip place.  Truck Yard is a funky and casual outdoor picnic area with food trucks, an Airstream converted into a bar and large porch for relaxing and hanging out.  We stayed at the Omni Dallas which is sleek and contemporary.  Their sports bar has great burgers and their restaurant, Texas Spice, has an awesome breakfast buffet.  Dinner at Texas Spice leaves little to be desired so save it for breakfast.  Cafe Brazil in Deep Elm also had an amazing breakfast and lunch menu.

At the Texas State Fair I found my next car at the car show.  The game didn’t go well and we blame it on some bad mojo emanating from belligerent students a few rows in front of us.  Thankfully, security took care of the annoying frat boy in a hurry and he behaved himself the rest of the time.  By that time things were already going south and I think it’s because we couldn’t concentrate on the first few plays.  We left at the beginning of the 4th quarter as it was apparent things were not going to turn around.  The benefit of leaving early is that the line for corn dogs is manageable and you get to avoid the Texas fans.  Drunk, gloating Texas fans are not a pretty sight.  Best to leave that to the college students.

We ended the weekend by going to see Gravity.  All in all an awesome weekend with the one I love.
