DIY Glass Magnets

It’s teacher appreciation week. You know what that means…finding a gift for teacher other than a #1 Teacher mug. Last year was paper flower bouquet. This year is a set of diy glass magnets.

Supplies:

Glass gems (found in the floral section at the craft store)
magnets
Modge Podge – high gloss finish
scrapbooking paper
foam paint brush
hot glue
Cricut or stamps

The glass gems I chose were about 1 1/4 inch in diameter. A little bit larger than the floral glass gems you see in arrangements but I think the larger size works better for this project. Begin by tracing around the glass gem on a bright color paper and cutting it out. After trial and error I discovered that bright colors work best. Paper with a dark or intricate pattern will not show through the glass very well.

I used my Cricut to cut out our teacher’s initial and cute shapes. I found that 3/4 inch was the perfect size for the Cricut cut outs. If you don’t have a Cricut, stamps would work well but make sure that the ink is completely dry before applying the Modge Podge.

Sidenote: When it comes to crafting, Cricut is a game changer. It can be used for so much more than just scrapbooking. Cards, invitations, classroom decorations, holiday decor, gift tags, it can even make gift boxes. If you have been thinking of getting one I highly recommend it.

Glue the shape to the traced cut out circle. You can use Modge Podge, Xyron sticker maker or good ‘ol Elmers. Apply a thick coat of Modge Podge to the right side of your cut out and apply that to the flat side of the glass gem. Allow to dry for about an hour.

Apply the magnet with hot glue. Let dry over night before you try and use them just to make sure the Modge Podge is set up.

Done and done. Our 1st grade teacher was very appreciative of her appreciation gift.
