Why I Blog featured on Oklahoma Women Bloggers

Oklahoma Women Bloggers

My reign as Miss April at Oklahoma Women Bloggers has come to a close.  Thank you to the gracious ladies at OWB for having me as blogger of the month.  It was a real treat! The final post for the month is “why I blog”.

Prior to blogging I didn’t really follow very many blogs.  I had a couple of girlfriends who had little blogs and I would check in with them every now and then but it wasn’t really on my radar.  I followed Pioneer Woman religiously, like everyone else in their dog but never really thought about starting my own blog until I went to her book signing.  I stood in line for a couple of hours, read her cookbook cover to cover, listened to others gush about her and started thinking.  Here was a regular Oklahoma woman who had turned her life into a blog and made something incredible.  She seemed so down to earth and we would probably be great friends if she lived next door or went to my church.  Then again, she could probably be best friends with a box of hair if given the chance.  The point was I started thinking; I have interesting thoughts, I’m sorta funny, I love to cook, I have cute kids…what the hell…I could have a blog.

The next week I started Hugs, Kisses and Snot.

Oklahoma Weather

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…well, maybe not.  Tornado season doesn’t end with a celebration of Christ’s birth and tons of presents…right?  I’m not missing out on some fun tornado festivity, am I?  But I digress.  This little tornado season post is reposted on Oklahoma Women Bloggers today and they titled it “It’s That Time Of Year”.  Something about that title made me giggle and think of Christmas carols.

Oklahoma Women Bloggers

Well, it’s that time of year again…tornado season.  We live in tornado alley, we should be used to it, right?  Wrong.  I get this feeling that people have been getting themselves more worked up than usual over the weather.  I’ve done a very scientific study (which consists of me reading Facebook) regarding our reaction to severe weather and I’ve come to the conclusion that it has gotten out of hand.  I can practically hear the sobs over FB as friends wring their hands and torment themselves over the impending doom.  The Norman Transcript had a front page article two weeks ago about the possibility of storms for the upcoming week.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen the possibility of storms (which didn’t happen on the day they said it would happen, by the way) making front page news. My Love/Hate Relationship with Facebook and Twitter

I’m back on Oklahoma Women Bloggers today!  Believe it or not this awesome clip from The Jerk has something to do with how I feel about Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook. When it comes to blogging I really like it. I actually feel like I’m interacting with readers when I see them “like” a blog post or comment and I can easily respond back. I can post pictures that can be viewed instantly instead of having to click thru to see it. I’m still a blogging nobody so all of the interactions are positive. Bloggers with a big following get the negative feedback that fans feel they can spout off at will. I guess when the jerks start coming out of the woodwork and commenting I should feel honored that they feel I’m important enough to spend their negative energy on me. Oh the anticipation of the day I’m treated like crap. Then I’ll know they really like me.

Blogger of the Month and Snark Attack

For the month of April I’m the Blogger of the Month at Oklahoma Women Bloggers.  Yeeeeeeehaaaawwww!  Thank you so much to these lovely ladies for having me as their BOM.  I’m truly flattered, humbled and honored.

Oklahoma Women Bloggers
Today’s featured post is about how women can be ugly to each other in person but the gloves really come off online.
We all know women can be brutal to each other.  Jealousy, judging, gossip, back stabbing, it’s nothing new.  In person, treating each other with spite and ugliness is done with a bit of finesse.  It’s passive aggressive, back-handed compliments, quietly spreading rumors behind someone’s back all with a glossy lipstick smile on our face.  Well, that is until Real Housewives came on the scene and for some reason they seem to think upending dining tables is an acceptable form of behavior for grown women.

Guest Post at The Mom Cafe

I’ve had the pleasure of making some new blogger friends over the past few months.  One of these friends is a wonderful woman who blogs about parenting, her faith and is keeping it real with a little potty talk for good measure.  I’ve really enjoyed getting to know her.  When she asked if I would be interested in being a guest blogger this month it was a no-brainer.  Yes!

Today Chris at The Mom Cafe had me over for a virtual coffee and to rehash parenting after Sandy Hook.  Yes, it’s still on my mind.

Hop on over to The Mom Cafe and sit and chat with us a while.  It’s a nice place to be.

Thanks Chris!

The Liebster Award

Bloggers love to give other bloggers “awards” just for the heck of it.  Its part of the fun of being active in the blogosphere.  Last week my sweet friend Julie at Lilacs & Longhorns gave me a Liebster Award. (I think Liebster is German for small time blogs need love too) Thanks Julie!

I met Julie at Bloggy Boot Camp last year and we have really hit it off.  She lives in the Dallas area and blogs about home decore, DIY decorating and family life.  She really has an eye for putting things together in the home to make it look cozy and polished at the same time.  I wish she lived closer so she could come over and help me out.

the-liebster-award

The Liebster Award was created (as far as I can tell) for small time bloggers to encourage and highlight other small time bloggers (like myself).  Last week I blogged at Oklahoma Women Bloggers about blogging envy an how easy it is to get jealous of other bloggers (since there are about 50 billion mom blogs out there).  Little awards like The Liebster Award are really thoughtful because they are all about lifting each other up, they create a sense of community and give you a little pat on the back just when you started thinking nobody really gives a crap.  I really appreciate Julie’s online friendship and am flattered that she gave me the award.

According to Julie who got the information from blogger who nominated her who got the info from the blogger who nominated her and so on, the recipient should have less than 200 followers.  Because I’m not going to go to the trouble to find out how many followers my recipients have I’m going to ignore that qualification.  My nominating qualification is that I must really enjoy their blog and also assume that they are small potatoes, like myself.  The award recipient also answers a list of questions then nominates some other bloggers.

Here are my answers to Julie’s questions:

  1. Why did you start blogging?  I started after the first Pioneer Woman book signing I went to.  I thought to myself…I think interesting thoughts, I have cute kids.  What the heck, I can start a blog.  And the rest is history.
  2. What is your dream job?  I’m not really sure if I have a “dream job” but I would love to be a big time blogger.
  3. How did you meet your husband?  We met in college at the first day of rehearsal for the operetta H.M.S. Pinafore.  I had a serious crush on him and apparently I lured him in with my daisy duke short shorts.
  4. When you were young what did you want to be when you grew up?  I used to want to be a broadway star or the next Sandy Patty.
  5. What’s your favorite TV show?  It’s a toss up between Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, Mad Men and Downton Abbey.
  6. Who is your celebrity crush?  Ewan McGregor.  Ever since Moulin Rouge I can’t get over him.
  7. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?  There are a lot of places I’d like to visit but first on my list is a tour of Italy a la Room With A View.
  8. If you could live in a mansion, would you?  Yes, but only if I have a staff (that someone else is paying for) and I don’t have to pay property taxes or upkeep.
  9. What is your pet peeve?  Being late.  It’s so inconsiderate.
  10. What is your favorite food?  I love all sorts of food but I’ll never turn down good sushi.  Preferably if it’s from Katsu Ya on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City, CA.

Now, here are my fellow small-blog nominees.  First let me say to these lovely ladies…please do not feel pressured to repost or pass the award along or answer my silly questions.  If you want to, great.  If not, absolutely fine too.

On to my list of smallish blogs that I enjoy (Again, I suspect that most of these ladies have more than 200 followers but finding out exact details is too much work for me.)

I’m Feelin’ Crafty Louise is an expert seamstress and quilter (compaired to my skills with a sewing machine, a squirell would do a better job a sewing a quilt than me, but Louise is seriously talented).  We exchanged guest posts last year and I love keeping up with her crafts.

The Mom Cafe  Chris blogs about parenting and often features other mom blogs on her site.  I’ve found Chris to be genuine and sweet and have enjoyed getting to know her.

Sabine of Suburbia  I recently discovered Sabine through Oklahoma Women Bloggers.  Something about her really resonated with me and this lady is really funny.  Anybody who can make me laugh is a-okay in my book.

Afternoon Popcorn Snack  Amy is a fellow Oklahoman and posts easy recipes and beautiful pictures.  I’ve really enjoyed her blog because she keeps it simple.

The Renegade Seamstress  Beth is another seamstress who can work wonders.  She has an eye for a bargan so she’s a gal after my own heart.  The awesome thing about her blog is that she can upcycle anything.  She takes frumpy thrift store finds and turns them into too cute skirts, purses, tops, leg warmers…you name it, she can make it.

Should any of these ladies feel inclined to pass this little award along, here are my get-to-know-you questions.

1.  What is your biggest pet peeve about Facebook?
2.  Have you ever had any strange/exotic pets?
3.  Mountains or the beach?
4.  What is the craziest or favorite Halloween you wore when you were a kid?
5.  Favorite snack food?
6.  If you fell through a time portal, what time period would you want to live in?
7.  Twitter, love it or hate it?
8.  Why did you start blogging?
9.  If you could be featured on a big time blog, which one would it be?
10.  Favorite movie?

Stay calm and keep blogging!

As a blogger it’s important to be involved in blogging communities.  I’ve enjoyed the support and blogging education I’ve received from SITs Girls (The Secret to Success is Support) and I’ve even made real live friends through their blogging conference.  Another site I’ve found helpful is The Blog Guidebook.  Both these sites exist to help bloggers succeed and offer support and helpful advice.  I’ll admit that I have stayed away from sites like BlogHer.  Their community has become so huge that I feel like I would become lost in the shuffle.  I may be wrong but when a community turns into a metropolis it becomes difficult to develop genuine relationships.

Recently I stumbled upon a new blogging community called Oklahoma Women Bloggers.  It focuses on discovering women bloggers in Oklahoma (hence the name) and fostering online connections.

Hugs, Kisses & Snot year in review

2012 review

It’s been a fun year of blogging and I truly appreciate everybody who has kept coming back to read and join me in bloggyland.  I plan to keep it up and hope to see all of you in 2013.

Here are my top 12 favorite posts from 2012. (more…)

Facebook B.S.

Apparently it has been going around the blogosphere that if you want your blog’s Facebook page posts to be “promoted” to the tops of reader’s wall feed, the blogger can do so by paying for it.  I don’t think so.  Sorry friends, but I’m not paying Facebook to do what it should be doing for free.  If I don’t pay for my posts to be featured then they get demoted to the bottom of your news feed and you may never know that I posted something that will change your life.  Like my grandmother’s chocolate cake or ridiculous pictures of the elf.

However, there is a way around this Facebook B.S.  but it takes a teeny-tiny bit of effort on your part, dear reader.

Here’s the deal.  First you need to hop on over to my Facebook page.  Hover your mouse over the “Liked” button.  (Assuming you have already “liked” the Hugs, Kisses and Snot Facebook page.  If you have not *gasp*, I forgive you, but go ahead and do that right now before Santa finds out.)  When you hover your mouse over the “Liked” button a drop down box will appear and you will want to click on “Show in News Feed”.  You can do this for all of your favorite pages and will ensure that posts from your favorite bloggers aren’t lost whenever Facebook reshuffles the deck.

Here’s my visual aid:

I’m a little peeved that I have to be using my blogging time to tell all you wonderful readers about this but a blogger can’t live with out Facebook.  So a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

If you take the time to do this I really and truly appreciate it.  And I really appreciate all 14 of you coming back week after week to read my little blog.  Seriously.

Responsible Citizen Pledge

During a close election, even the most well-mannered citizen can become a little insane.  That is why I have come up with the Responsible Citizen Pledge to help keep us all on track.

Please repeat after me. (more…)
