Some of my favorite children’s books

Here is a very short list of some of my favorite children’s books. I’m leaving off all the obvious ones like Make Way for Ducklings, Where the Wild Things Are and all the Dr. Seuss and Dr. Seuss inspired books. We all know and love those classics so I don’t need to list them here. These are books that I have newly discovered (and rediscovered) over the past 6 years.

Bats at the Library by Brian Lies

What better way to discover the love of books and the wonder a library has to offer than through the eyes of a bat.

Prayer for a Child by Rachel Field

Precious bedtime prayer with beautiful, classic illustrations.

Before You Were Born by Howard Schartz

This is a great book for a new mom. An interesting twist on baby’s preparation for the journey from womb to world.

Giant John by Arnold Lobel

I bought this book at a used book sale a few years ago and it has been a hit.

The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton

I had forgotten all about this book until I saw it at B&N. It’s such a sweet story I had to get it to share with Addison and he loves it too. I think I may be trying to subconsciously bias my boys against urban sprawl with this book.

MABEL THE WHALE, SOFTCOVER, BEGINNING TO READ (BEGINNING-TO-READ BOOKS) by Patricia King

My mom used to read this to me and now reads it to Addison (the very same book w/ my little crayon drawings in it). I don’t think she realized what she was doing but this book planted the seed of animal rights in me.

God is Everywhere: Discovering God’s Love in the World

by Barbara Burrow

Another great find at the used book sale. Great for bed time and a simple introduction into the universal concept of God’s love.

What are some of your favorites?

Don’t forget Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Other favorites for bedtime reading included Stuart Little (not the stupid movie), Ralph the Mouse series and Harry Potter (when they got a little older)

  2. Hugs, Kisses and Snot

I loved Ralph the Mouse! We also like the Magic Tree House series.
I’m eager to start chapter books like Little House and HP but I have to remind myself that we have a lot of time to enjoy bedtime stories.

  3. Designated Hitter

“But you don’t have to take MY word for it…”
